Ruling on celebrating the Mawlid and Israa’ and Mi`raaj

Question: What is the ruling on celebrating the Mawlid (the Prophet’s birthday) and the night of Israa’ (Night Journey) and Mi‘raaj (Ascension to Heaven) with the purpose of calling to Islaam and showing the rites of Islaam as is done in Indonesia?

Answer: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) called to Islaam through words, deeds and Jihaad (striving in the Cause of Allaah). Although he was the most knowledgeable about the ways of Da‘wah (Call to Allaah) and how to spread Islaam and show its rites, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not ever celebrate his birthday or the night of Israa’ and Mi‘raaj while he was the most aware and appreciative of the value of these days… read more here.
