Reciting Al-Faatihah for bestowing mercy on a deceased relative

Question 21: The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said: When a person dies, their (righteous) deeds come to an end, except three: Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity), knowledge that is being benefited from, or a righteous son who supplicates (to Allaah) for them.

Is it permissible to recite Al-Faatihah (Opening Chapter of the Qur’aan) so that Allaah may have mercy on my paternal aunt and her son? If this is not permissible, what are the suitable Du‘aa’s (supplications) in such cases?

Answer: It is not permissible for you to recite Al-Faatihah or any other Soorah (Qur’aanic chapter) for them, because there is no evidence substantiating this. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who does an action which is not in accordance with this matter of ours (Islaam) will have it rejected. (Related by Muslim)... read more here.
