Tape-recording the Qur’aan starting with Soorah al-Naas until reaching Soorah Al-Baqarah

Question 122: Some education departments are asking about the possibility of tape-recording the Noble Qur’aan in an ascending order starting with short Soorahs (Qur’aanic chapters). This means to tape-record the Qur’aan starting with Al-Faatihah, since it is the opening chapter of the Qur’aan, and then Soorahs Al-Naas, Al-Falaq, Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Masad, Al-Nasr, Al-Kaafiroon, and so on until reaching Soorah Al-Baqarah…

Answer: It is not permissible to tape-record the Qur’aan in a reverse Surah order, by starting with Soorah Al-Naas and ending with Soorah Al-Baqarah, because the Surahs were given the current order due to the efforts exerted by the Sahaabah (Companions of the Prophet, may Allaah be pleased with them) during the era of `Uthmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him).
