Question 96: In my workplace, I listen to Qur’aan tapes and make a Khatmah (one complete reading of the entire Qur’aan) every ten days. Will the reward be equivalent to the tenfold reward given to a person who makes a Khatmah through reciting from the Mus-haf (copy of the Qur’aan)?
Answer: The reward referred to is mentioned in the Hadeeth on the authority of `Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) in which the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who recites a letter from the Book of Allaah will receive a Hasanah (rewardable good deed), and the Hasanah is multiplied by ten. I do not say that ‘Alif Laaam Meeem’ is a letter, but ‘Alif’ is a letter, ‘Laaam’ is a letter, and ‘Meeem’ is a letter. (Related by Al-Tirmidee) This reward pertains to a reader or reciter of the Qur’aan... read more here.
