Is it permissible for me to recite the Qur’aan while people are not listening?

Question 97: Is it permissible for me to recite the Qur’aan while people are not listening. Some Muslims say, “Do not raise your voice while reciting the Qur’aan for we do not listen to you, and thus you commit a sin.” Are they right and what should I do concerning this? Do I commit a sin?

Answer: The Glorious Qur’aan is the best Dikr (Remembrance of Allaah), for it is the Words of Allaah (Glorified and Exalted be He). Allaah commands us to recite the Qur’aan, listen to it, contemplate it and act according to it. However, if the people around do not listen to the Qur’aan while being recited due to any reason, it will not be permissible for the reciter to raise his voice when reciting the Qur’aan.
