Question 84: We teach religion to first year primary students who are six or seven years old. In the Qur’aan lesson, the pupils hold the Mus-haf (copy of the Qur’aan) to follow up, so that they learn the alphabetic letters. Should all of them perform Wudoo’ (ablution) before the Qur’aan lesson or only those who have reached the age of seven? Please advise in detail and mention the evidence on this. Answer: Those who have reached the age of seven should be asked to perform Wudoo to hold the Mus-haf. As for those who are under the age of seven, they should not hold the Mus-haf, according to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): None should touch the Qur’aan except one who is Taahir (ritually pure).
