Performing optional night Prayer on the eve of `Eed al-Fitr

Question 461: What is the ruling on offering Taraaweeh (special supererogatory night Prayer in Ramadaan) in the Masjid (mosque) on the night of `Eed al-Fitr (the Festival of Breaking the Fast)? Is this night considered the last night in Ramadaan or the first night in Shawwaal?

Answer: It is a Bidd`ah (innovation in religion) to single out the night of `Eed to offer Qiyaam-ul-Layl (optional Prayer at night) to the exclusion of all other nights, whether by offering it alone or in congregation. This was not authentically reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him), who stated: Anyone who does an action which is not stated in this matter of ours (Islaam) will have it rejected. However, if a person is accustomed to offering Qiyaam-ul-Layl, they may observe their habit on the night of `Eed on the condition that offering Qiyaam-ul-Layl is done alone and not in congregation. The night of `Eed is not part of Ramadaan if the beginning of Shawwaal is more here.
